Plastic vs Wood bowling pins

Bowling pins are traditionally made out of wood; however, professionals will use a heavier bowling pin made out of plastic for advanced bowlers. These standard-sized plastic pins can be used as replacement parts. Bowling pins that look similar to these- but with colored dots on them -are referred to as duckpins because they appear slightly smaller than regulation-sized bowling pins. Duckpin bowling is an indoor sport played mainly across the eastern United States and Canada, and even in some other countries such as France and Japan. Even though it’s called “duckpin” there’s no relation to the much larger bowling sport of duckpin.

To give them their shape, pins are mounted on a metal rod that is inserted into the pin under the large end. An additional metal piece known as a “stirrup” holds each end of the pin in place and also acts as an attachment point for other parts used to complete assembly. Bowling pins weigh anywhere from 5 – 12 lbs., but professional regulation pins will be between 6-1/2 – 9 lbs. The bottom of each pin has several holes so it can grip the wood surface during play. The holes also allow air to circulate around each bowling pin, which helps prevent humidity damage that could turn them brittle or even cause mold growth inside them over time.
